FAQ | Guitar Lessons For Kids

What is the Right Age To Start?

I’ve been teaching for over a decade and in that time, I have taught students as young as 5 years old. Considering that most professional violinists start as young as the age of 3, there really isn’t a “right age” to start children when learning an instrument. In my opinion, the earlier the better. Just be aware that if they are under 10 years old, it may be best that you sit in the lessons with them so you can help them at home. At such a young age, their success often depends on the help from a parent.

What Guitar Do I Buy?

One of the next common questions is “What Guitar Do I Buy?”  If you have more questions about what size, brand, or what to expect when purchasing your first guitar, you can read about this in more depth in my previous blog. Read Here → What Guitar Should I Buy? : My 3 Step Guide

Lessons : How Often? Lesson Length?  How Much $$?

How Often Do Lessons Occur? Most instructors teach lessons one day per week.

How Long Are The Lessons? Most lessons are 30 minutes per week. If the student is more advanced, then the lessons will be 1 hour per week. It really depends on the capacity of the student and the budget.

What Do Lessons Cost? It does depend on the teacher but it will usually cost anywhere from $120 to $150 per month for 30 minute lessons. That comes out to around $30, to $37.50 per lesson.

Best Books for 5+ Years

I’m going to give my favorite guitar and ukulele books for young beginners. I like these books because they are formatted in a great way that applies enough theory that is age appropriate in a step by step fashion. The book is colorful with art that matches the theme of each song that is being learned.
